Scardino invite to Chequers

After all, mingling with UK high-brow society in Browns countryhouse could be interesting, but if there is no wireless access, it makes it all the less attractive.

But a guest list, revealed this week by the UK government, shows the exception. Female internet heroe Marjorie Scardino was singled out to meet with Britains elite in Chequers this year and we can’t but applaud Brown for inviting her.

Marjorie Scardino is the only female chief executive in the FTSE 100 and Forbes 31st most influential woman in the magazine’s league table. She is owner of the financial Times and CEO of its parent company Pearson, overseing a business that includes Penguin books and a US educational publisher.

US-born Scardino’s strategy with Pearson has been to diversify the business, expanding its digital operations and developing the FT as a global brand, and that is what gets her on our database of female internet heroes.

Before taking over Pearson,  Scardino former oversaw the improvements in fortune of the Economist (the group is still half-owned by Pearson), trebling the magazine’s circulation.

Let’s hope she did some good in upturning Brown’s misfortunes too.
