it’s a women websites world
Women-sites seem to be taking the internet by storm. According to a report by internet traffic measurement firm comScore, US sites aimed primarily at women are growing. Mother blogs, women network sites and fashion and beauty sites grew 35 percent last year. Women’s sites had 85 million visitors in May 2008, 42 percent more than the same month last year, comScore reports.
Unsurprisingly, advertising follows this trend. A total of 4.4 billion ads were displayed on women’s web sites in May 2008, which is more than the total amount of advertising on children, teens and families comScore records.
We of thenextwomen reported on how investment is rife for female websites at the moment, citing examples such as Peacock Equity’s and Venrock’s $5 million investment in BlogHer (see the picture for founders Lisa Stone, Elisa Camahort Page, Jory Des Jardins), a network of blogs by and for women or Glam Media’s launch of women media-websites in the UK and Germany . Similarly, this March, Yahoo created Shine, a website where women can get news on various topics such as fashion, parenting or work and money, network and voice their opinion.
Recently launched websites trying to tap into the women niche, are websites such as SmartNow, a website with shopping tips for women over 35, fabulously40.com, a networking site for women over 40, and wowOwow, a weblog for women over 40, which was created with seedcapital of $1 million from its co-founders.
