Dubai turns to businesswomen
Dubai announced this week that a businesswomen building will arise in its Business Bay development.
Now that the city has exhausted its appeal as a duty-free paradise, as the Islamic financial capital of the world and as the location for the world’s most expensive hotel, the city now seeks the spotlight with its new women-friendly initiative. Eve’s Tower, located within Dubai’s Business Bay development, will be the first tower where only women can own office space.

In September, Glossy magazine Harper’s Bazaar has given out the Women of the Year Awards 2008. The awards include Inspiration of the Year, Breakthrough of the Year, Creative Woman of the Year, Businesswoman of the Year and something called Man in a Woman’s World… Among the winners:
- Entrepreneur of the Year: Sara Blakely of SPANX, the online underwear company
- Business Woman of the Year: Elisabeth Murdoch of Shine Media
Women entrepreneurs prove creative at ideablob
Designing educational math toys for children in the developing world, promoting positive body image and self-esteem in women through thought-provoking clothes or illustrating sustainability through an ecovillage. Even though not winners of the Seedcamp Week, there are 3 women founded companies that have made it through the previous finalist round of Seedcamp. UNIKI is a company specializing in intelligent media, such as interactive touch screens. But also moving windows. Mija Lorbek is its CEO and founder.

Launch: Girl Meets (i.e. rents) Dress
With the party season starting soon, Anna Bance, formerly a PR manager at Hermes, launched GIRLMEETSDRESS. The website lets you borrow…party!… and return the most beautiful party dresses. Labels include Chloe, Marlene Birger and Diane von Furstenberg. The lay-ouy of the website reminds us of NET-A-PORTER, but without the exorbitant prices.

The TED website has just published an insightful video on pitching a business before VC’s. David S. Rose explains that VC’s are interested to invest in a company, only because they are interested in YOU, the entrepreneur.

Pact between Wuzzon and Dance4Life for STOP AIDS NOW
Wuzzon of founders and young Female Internet Heroes Brigitta Schlumpf and Louise Verschuren have entered into a social responsibility pact with Dance4Life. Famous DJ’s, as Don Diablo, Tiësto and Paul van Dyk have donated a track to the Dance4LifeAlbum that is being presented this week.
Wuzzon has opened a shop with these tracks as ringtones to be downloaded on mobile phones. With the income Wuzzon, Dance4LIfe and Schools4Life support the STOP AIDS NOW project.
Winner of Brainstorm Camp: Favz
‘Don’t think pink’ is one of the first statements being made at this PICNIC ‘08 side event , thenextwomen brainstorm camp, with an audience of fifty, mainly women. Marianne van Leeuwen - serial E-entrepreneur currently focusing on Marketing to Women - starts of with some words of wisdom on female consumers: They don’t recognize themselves in traditional marketing messages, they live complex lives trying to balance work and family, and they don’t necessarily like things that are pink. Launch of PositiveTV
This week saw the launch of a new internet tv channel: Positive TV. Co-founder is Caroline Whittle, who is as she says “passionate about positive media and about saving the world.”
Positive TV has been created out of a passion to discover Positive News from around the world. It reports on people and events that are helping to create and shape a positive future. Positive TV looks to broaden the global conversation and raises questions about the world we live in and the sort of future we want to create.
Jobswap introduced at PICNIC ‘08
About 50 women joined during thenextwomen breakfast at PICNIC’08 in a simple networking game: jobswap. As offline networking is as important as online networking, thenextwomen designed the tool to accelerate the offline matching of women.
The women filled in their job swap cards with the services that they were offering and the people, activities or things that they were seeking.
