internet vs magazines
Recent research by the PPA suggests the internet does not have a harmful effect on people’s desire to read offline and that in some cases reading websites even encourages people to read magazines. The research, carried out by magazine subscription website magazinesbymail and commissioned by the PPA, found that magazines remain the preferred source of information for more than 65% of those surveyed. A total of 25% of the people surveyed said that viewing articles online made them want to read a magazine to find out more about the subjects viewed online.
We reported earlier on the newspaper becoming the new glossy. This as glossy paper is getting cheaper and automation is enabling newspapers to produce very limited print runs. But whether this would affect the glossy’s readership negatively did not become clear from the cited research. Nor is it clear whether the onset of the internet has helped or undermined reading more generally without a bit of crystal ball glazing.
Only 7% of the respondents said they were less likely to read a magazine because of the availability of such information from the internet.
Looks like a win-win situation for all!
