From the Benelux, via London to Jordan, 21 entrepreneurs have made it to the outstanding 2009 European incubator programme that is called Seedcamp. Most of the startups have the ‘killer combination of team and product, and all of them have their technology in house’, according to Saul Klein.  Its the result of the year long search for the best first time entrepreneurs in Europe by Reshma Sohoni, CEO of Seedcamp and Saul Klein, the founder of Seedcamp.

Seedcamp’s motto is Filter, Mentor, Connect

The third Seedcamp Week event is about to kick off, and this morning an exclusive press group were given inside information. Reshma Sohoni of Seedcamp:

“It has been a whirlwind over the past three years as we try to create a platform that helps first time entrepreneurs start and grow businesses in Europe.  We are now focused on offering a complete program, not just a week-long event, which includes ongoing mentoring from our amazing network  all over the world, flexible investing structures, and access to the companies and people who happen to know a thing or two about building businesses.”

seedcampMore conclusions of Seedcamp: It has reviewed more than 1,500 applications, with teams from 53 different countries. Entrepreneurs have been connected with more than 500 mentors, through 1,620 mentoring sessions. Seedcamp has toured through Mini Seedcamp in 10 countries. Seedcamp has mentored more than 280 companies. And Seedcamp has invested in 14 Seedcamp winners, i.e. 1% of the companies that have submitted their plan.

Other conclusions: Looking at the 1500 applicants, increasing entrepreneurship comes from Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and less from the Benelux and Southern Europe. Startups focus on marketplace solutions, products and games  and less on social media and advertising led business models while consumer based business are out. As to the required skills, no more 1 founder and outsourced core activities, while

Israeli entrepreneurs top the list of the required Sillicon Valley features to succeed: Aggressive, Agility and Speed.

Companies that have not made it to Seedcamp have gone to other routes for funding, have bootstrapped or have decided that entrepreneurship is a bridge too far.

1 Woman-led company that has found a place at this year’s Seedcamp programme is Yubitech from Israel, where Nili Shohet is co-founder and VP Business Development, but apart from that no women led company has made it to the final rounds.
