3 Reasons Why Fellow Founders Are My Favorite Customers

Alyssa with Fellow Founder Stefanie Lang from Makime These are the people I invite to my atelier for private tastings: founders, entrepreneurs and game changers.

Of course everyone is welcome to stop by, but I go out of my way to make time - turn off the pings and dings - pour a merlot and share my most precious bounty, my chocolate innovation, with fellow entrepreneurs.

It’s because ladies like you are my kindred spirits and fully understand what and how I have got to "this place" with my business. You did it yourself. We skinned our knees on the same rocks and we both slid into first place whooping and yelling (without spilling our champagne) when something great happened.

Fellow founders are my favourite customers because of three key reasons:

1.  You know what it takes

2.  You demand the best

3.  You are visionary

These three combined means as a customer, we end up sharing belly laughs and tears sitting in my old rocking chairs at the atelier, which I built to look like a comfortable living room.

Because, like me, you practically live in your business. It's like inviting a friend around for a Friday night drink - we share our thoughts and by the end I feel my mind is lightened (and enlightened).

You know what it takes - you deconstruct my effort

When us founders share products/services with one another - we view it from business case to USP to packaging to delivery. We don't just hold each other’s product in hand and think "do I want it". Instead we look at the stickers and wonder if it was off-set print; we think about the back-end of ingredient supply; of web hosting; of Skype conf calls; of tests and samples; of storage of PR; and the finally we look up at our fellow founder and, while, holding her heart in our hand, we congratulate her on Making Something. We give advice in similar things we've tried; we open our contact books and send vCards with suppliers and coaches to help her along. We insist on paying full price for our founder friend's widgit, make a future order for the next version and honour that she took a step forward from the bleary land of "one day" to "today I did".

As fellow founders - we stay awake on the same nights worrying about XYZ. We know the toughness each other needs to see our dreams through.

It's these Friday evenings when I invite a fellow founder customer over for a sample of our new single bean virgin chocolate cocktail. We sit in my rocking chairs and spill our cocktails, try three versions and end up needing taxis to get home. In the meantime we bemoaned our businesses and raised a toast to doing more tests.

You demand the best

As a fellow founder, you demand as much from me as you do from yourself. You see that we are cut from the same cloth and expect quality, ethics, innovation and passion to be matched to yours. The only way you made your business the star it is, because you worked harder and smarter and you know what it takes to break through. You rightfully want this from all your suppliers. I love that. Hold me to your standards and help me broaden my ideas.

We help each other when we hold the entrepreneurial sisterhood to the best it can be.

We hold mirrors up to each other and we help move the mechanics of a better world through dotted 'I's, impeccable production and crossed 'T's.

As my customer you engage me in limitless thinking. I swear every customisation and new idea for products was based on conversations with fellow founders who saw beyond my current offering and asked for the next level. As fellow founders, sometimes our distance gives us perspective to help businesses take next steps as we aren't muddied down in their trenches.

While demanding the best I become part of your success support. I fully accept responsibility for my fellow founders’ nutrition. Every cacao nut picked, every sundrying day is undertaken carefully to ensure that when you take a pause from your business, I can support you nutritionally and emotionally with my chocolate contribution. Given I started working on creating single bean virgin chocolate in my kitchen years ago to address my own health standards, I figure this is the best contribution I can make and share in your life too. I want my fellow founders business to fly too and I can be part of this.

You're a visionary

You can see past my interim packaging; you know my website looks average because I'm building B2B market; you know my eyes are a bit baggy because I'm just tired. As fellow founders we can see a sparkling business, a strong entrepreneur and limitless opportunities. We remind this to each other. We send pictures and web links with success stories to each other. We believe so much in each other, we dial a few numbers and tell our friends "Hey, look for for XXXX she's just launched YYYY and you just need to have one (or four)".

As customers, my dear fellow founders are a combination of coaches, fans, big sisters and devils. Quite possibly the most relevant niche I love to serve with all my heart and, inevitably the people that I role-reverse-with and go sit in your offices, surf your sites, pick up your products --- and marvel about your courage, your innovation, and squeak "ok sign me up, I need one for everyone I know."

Blessed be my BLYSSed out entrepreneur customers.

See you next week, at my atelier for a sample of crazy-idea-#26. Can't wait to smear it, munch it, play with it and see you laugh at another hair-brained idea. Of course, it's your idea I'm talking about.
